Short biography of Grace Hopper
– On December 9, 1906, in New York City, Grace Hopper was born Grace Brewster Murray. She studied at Vassar College. She graduated in 1928 and then entered the prestigious Yale University where she became a doctor of mathematics in 1934. Grace taught mathematics at Vassar College and married a fellow literature professor, Vincent Hopper, in 1930. Their marriage lasted 15 years until the divorce in 1945. The couple had no children. At the age of 37, she joined the American Navy during the Second World War. Promoted to lieutenant, she was posted to the Bureau of Ordnance Computation Project at Harvard University in 1944. She is part of the team that programs the Harvard Mark computer.

Grace Hopper participated in the development of UNIVAC I and designed the first compiler, called A-0 System. She wants to revolutionize programming and supports the idea that computer language must be written in a vocabulary similar to English to make it more accessible. She developed the COBOL language in 1959 at IBM, where she has worked since 1957. She continued her work on the standardization of computer language in the 1970s, creating, in parallel with COBOL, the Fortran. Grace is an external consultant for Digital Equipment, conducting conferences on the beginnings of computer science until she died in 1992. She is the author of many books on computers such as Understanding Computers, published in 1984. In 1986, “Amazing Grace” is decorated with the Defense Distinguished Service Medal the highest existing distinction for non-combatants.
Grace Hopper participated in a famous American program presented by David Letterman in 1986, which made her even more popular with the general public. Internationally recognized, she was enrolled in the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1994. The “Queen of Computer” also receives the National Medal of Technology for its contributions to the development of programming languages in 1991.
